Valentine’s Day Special

Smooth Operator
I had been dating a wonderful man for nearly two years. He had been traveling a lot for work so we hadn’t been able to spend a lot of time together, but that had changed a couple months before Valentine’s Day when he switched jobs. For the first time we were able to spend entire weekends together and really plan our future. We were talking about marriage and having children and everything.

A couple weeks before Valentine’s Day he started acting real sneaky. I figured he was planning on surprising me with something big, so I didn’t get suspicious. Although we hadn’t made definite plans for Valentine’s Day, I had assumed we would spend it together. I even thought that he would perhaps propose to me in a very romantic setting. How wrong I was.

The day before Valentine’s Day he called and asked if we could celebrate over the weekend. he had a big project due (his first) and he really wanted to make sure he didn’t screw it up. I was disappointed, but since the holiday was on a weekday, I thought that maybe it would be better to wait until the weekend to celebrate. I was a little hurt that I wouldn’t see him at all, but understood. maybe he would whisk me away for the weekend. :) Instead I made plans with a couple of my friends to go out for a really nice dinner at a restaurant I’d been meaning to try.

On Valentine’s Day I arrived at the restaurant and found my friends in a very strange mood. They asked where “John” was, and I explained. They then told me I might want to head over to the bar. Sure enough - there was the love of my life having drinks and holding hands with another woman! One thing I won’t tolerate is being lied to and cheated on. I didn’t care what kind of scene I was causing, I confronted him right then and there, in the middle of the bar. Turns out he wasn’t cheating on me, he was cheating WITH me! He was with his wife!

Our entire relationship was a lie. He didn’t travel for work at all. Those nights and weekends he spent with her. He was able to spend time with me when he told her he was traveling. His roommate wasn’t his roommate, and his apartment wasn’t his at all - it was his brother’s and his brother played the “roommate” role. His wife had been taking care of her dying mother the last couple of months, which is why he had more time to spend with me. He was a smooth operator to the millionth degree.

I’m not sure who was more shocked - his wife or me. But I know one thing, the scene I caused in the bar was nothing compared to the scene she had caused. Much broken glass, a tipped over table and 2 police officers later, and the night was over.

Needless to say, he didn’t propose. This one will take a LONG while to get over.
