Potted Veggie Garden

Ok - I have a question - any tips on veggie gardening in pots for a patio as I have no lawn to plant a real garden. Veggies like tomatoes, herbs (basil, chives)? what types of pots, soil mixture etc.......
Thanks!!

If it just so happens that you do not have room in the ground or you have no ground in the sun or you have no ground at all, you may use pots. Any kind of pots will do, whatever you like and what ever fits. Plastic, terracotta, concrete, round, square, or rectangular. Just make sure that the pot has holes for drainage and the water can run freely out of the bottom when you water. For the soil, any good potting soil will do. The soil you get should have some perlite--white stuff--already in it, if not, add it in at about 50/50 mixture. There are many fun things you can do with pots, they are very versitile, although you may not be able to plant everything in them.  Things like squash, melons, and corn are probably better left in the ground. Pots are good for herbs, tomatoes, and other small things.  If you will be planting tomatoes, for example, pick a pot that will fit the plant. If it is a regular size tomato such as Better Boy, Beafsteak, or Early Girl, get a big pot, 20-24 inches (and you will probably need a stake or a cage.  If it is a small tomato like Yellow Pear, Currant, or Cherry, a small ten inch pot will be fine.  When planting herbs, you can put one in each pot or group a bunch together in one pot. It is fun to have themes too.  For instance, make a salsa pot...plant a tomato in the middle, then around the sides, plant garlic, cilantro, onions, and a pepper or two.
