The Butcher Boy Patrick McCabe Publisher: Dell/Cutting Edge
One of the most poetic descents into madness and violence I
have read. The story of Francie, a lost youth in a small Irish town, brings forth an almost uneasy sympathy for a boy turned crazed killer. As his madness develops, you feel yourself joining in his
macabre journey. McCabe draws you in so deeply with his unique writing style, you feel as if you yourself can be one step from complete insanity.
The Butcher Boy was awarded the 1992 Irish Times - Aer Lingus Prize and
was shortlisted for the 1992 Booker Prize. Not a light read, and it takes a bit to get used to the use of constant run-on sentences and Irish slang. But once you
fall into the rhythm, you’ll be mesmerized.
