Crafty Divas and Entrepreneurial Empresses
June 2004's Diva
Elizabeth and John Stevenson
of Jae Cosmetics

Once upon a time there lived a husband and wife who
were very creative, fun and down to earth people. They
shared a love for make-up, fashion & anything &
everything that makes a person look & feel good about
themeselves.
They loved makeup and how it enhanced
ones already natural look. They wanted to bring to
you a line that is filled with fun, eye catching
colors that would stand out above all the rest. The
husband and wife dreamed of a owning their own makeup line and and selling it. Hmmm, what a great idea they thought. But what should we call it? The wife came up with a brillant name and decided to call it Jae
Cosmetics (the combination of their first initials).
And so there it was the beginning of their fairytale
that would soon become a reality. They would have big
dreams of Jae Cosemtics becoming a huge success.
Their dream was to make as many people look and feel
as pretty as a princess waiting for her knight in
shining armor. This is the beginning of Jae Cosmetic's
fairytale and will continue to live on and on. As for
the husband and wife, well they too went on to live
happily ever after.

Our Review

Lush, rich lips. That's what I want for summer. And I found it in a cute little tube straight from Jae Cosmetics. When I received my package with Rare Rubies Line N Laquer, I immediately became the belle of my ball. Lightweight, long lasting and lush color! I was irrisistably kissable! You can be, too! It's as easy as placing an order! Smooch!

The Basic Lowdown:
Girlposse.com: Who are you?
Elizabeth Stevenson of Jae Cosmetics:
Elizabeth and John Stevenson
Girlposse.com: Where are you located?
Elizabeth Stevenson of Jae Cosmetics:
Columbia, MD
Girlposse.com: What is your creation / business?
Elizabeth Stevenson of Jae Cosmetics:
Cosmetics and now a new accessories…one of a kind handmade cosmetic bags made by me!
Girlposse.com: Where can people buy your stuff?
Elizabeth Stevenson of Jae Cosmetics:
Interested divas can go to www.jaecosmetics.com
Girlposse.com: Tell us something about yourself - your personality:
Elizabeth Stevenson of Jae Cosmetics:
I’m extremely impatient, love to laugh and don’t take things too seriously. John is very laid back and easy to get along with. That’s why I love him so much!
The Nitty Gritty:
Girlposse.com: How long have you been doing this?
Elizabeth Stevenson of Jae Cosmetics:
We’ve been doing this just this year.
Girlposse.com: Beginning a business is a big step. How did this become a "business" vs. just a "hobby""?
Elizabeth Stevenson of Jae Cosmetics:
It is something that John has always wanted to do being that he’s been a makeup artist for 12yrs and that I love makeup and all the girly things associated with it.
Girlposse.com: Did you have previous business experience - or was the business end new to you?
Elizabeth Stevenson of Jae Cosmetics:
No experience running a business…we just learn as we go.
Girlposse.com: Are there any resources you would recommend to future Entrepreneurial Empresses? (books, websites, etc.)
Elizabeth Stevenson of Jae Cosmetics:
Just do lots of research. I got my hands on everything and anything on how to run a business and about cosmetic gurus and what they did and how they succeeded. I’d like to be like Jeannine Lobel of Stila. I love her overall look of her line and what she represents, but if I don’t reach that high of status that’s fine too. But there is a ton of free info on the internet.
Girlposse.com: What was (is) your biggest obstacle in selling what you create?
Elizabeth Stevenson of Jae Cosmetics:
Biggest obstacle is marketing on a tight budget, but there are a lot of ways to advertise for free or very little cost. We just did a little bit at a time when we could afford it. And of course word of mouth is always the best route to go and it’s free.
Girlposse.com: Are there any special challenges in developing a make-up line?
Elizabeth Stevenson of Jae Cosmetics:
No not really. Being a female and John being a makeup artist we really had an advantage b/c we know what girls like and what appeals to us the most.
Girlposse.com: How important do you think packaging is in selling a product?
Elizabeth Stevenson of Jae Cosmetics:
I think packaging is important but what’s most important is the quality of the item your selling. Just b/c it looks good on the outside doesn’t mean it’ll be good on the inside.
Girlposse.com: Are there any plans to expand your product line?
Elizabeth Stevenson of Jae Cosmetics:
I’ve already expanded our line and added my makeup bags. You need something to hold the makeup in right?
Girlposse.com: What keeps you going on a bad day?
Elizabeth Stevenson of Jae Cosmetics:
My hubby and my kids and I hope to be my own boss someday
Girlposse.com: Where are some of your favorite places to shop?
Elizabeth Stevenson of Jae Cosmetics:
Anyway I can find a good deal. I’ve really been into antique shops to find fabric for my bags. I like boutiques in Georgetown, DC and Old Town Alexandria, VA. They have cute one of a kind stuff.
Girlposse.com: What was the best piece of advice you've been given?
Elizabeth Stevenson of Jae Cosmetics:
John always tells me to be patient and of course be yourself
Girlposse.com: What advice would you give to a future Crafty Diva?
Elizabeth Stevenson of Jae Cosmetics:
Stay focused and of course be patient. Follow your dreams and do something you love and that you have a passion for and success will follow.
Girlposse.com: Are they any other Crafty Divas or Entrepreneurial Empresses we should know
about?
Elizabeth Stevenson of Jae Cosmetics:
Yes, my friend Danaia of Lounge Babies. She has really great cute baby and kids clothes all handsewn by her! www.loungebabies.com check her out.
