Crafty Divas and Entrepreneurial Empresses

October 2003's Diva
Kim Taylor
of 8 Point 5 Concepts,

Home of Note to self...™ sticky notes and Sticker Ticker™ sticker watches

The Review
**********************************************************

I have been waiting for months to show off these cool watches. It was definitely worth the wait!!! A package of these goodies arrived just when I had time to spare (darn car accidents!!) and I've had a blast changing the designs to suit my mood of the moment. With more than 600 reusable stickers to choose from, and handy little tweezers, changing the look is easy as pie! For the gal that has it all, wants it all, or changes her mind as to what she wants - this is the must-have accessory!! I'm also thinking ahead - way ahead - to the holiday season.... what a perfect gift idea!!!!!!

But it isn't just about the watches.... (which I love)...there is an entire line of uber-cool "Note to self..." stickers. Reusable and fun with designs for nearly everyone. And the best chopsticks for those with no finger coordination. Seriously - if you've always thought it impossible to eat with chopsticks - these are a definite must.

OK - I happen to think everything they offer is a definite must. But for VERY good reason! ;) But enough raving about 'em. Let's hear what Kim have to say about herself, the company, and their goodies...........

The Interview
**********************************************************

The Basic Lowdown:

Girlposse.com: Who are you?
Kim Taylor: Kim Taylor

Girlposse.com: Where are you located?
Kim: In glamorous Cincinnati, Ohio.

Girlposse.com: What is your creation / business?
Kim: Unique products, primarily the original sticker lines Note to self...™ sticky notes and Sticker Ticker™ sticker watches. The products are designed, developed and manufactured under the company name 8 Point 5 Concepts.

Girlposse.com: Where can people buy your stuff?
Kim: On the website at www.8point5.com and also from a variety of different retailers around the country, including Flax Art & Design (www.Flaxartanddesign.com) and Dakota Watch Company (www.dakotawatchco.com). .

Girlposse.com: How long have you been doing this?
Kim: I've been creating different things, like purses, books and t-shirts, since college. After years as a designer in animation and also advertising, I finally began working in product design about 5 years ago. I started working for myself just over two years ago.

Girlposse.com: Tell us something about yourself - your personality:
Kim: I am curious and I love to travel, read, paint and draw. I am a perfectionist, sometimes going over and over a project a few too many times. Because I love to see the design in all things, I never seem to get bored. Odd things usually make me laugh, so I'm probably easily amused. I try to always keep a sense of humour.

Girlposse.com: What finally inspired you to offer your goods to the world?
Kim: After getting frustrated designing for others, my boyfriend suggested I apply my creative energy working on some of the concepts we'd come up with together. After pooling our resources, I quit my job and began putting those ideas to work on a full-time basis.

Girlposse.com: What was (is) the biggest obstacle in selling what you create?
Kim: Getting the word out, finding independent sales reps to reach buyers and get the products in the right stores.

Girlposse.com: How did you initially come up with your ideas?
Kim: The ideas for all the products have come along spontaneously, kind of while thinking out loud. The concepts are always a collaborative effort between my boyfriend and myself. We have a fun creative connection where, out of the blue, one of us might say something like, "Wouldn't it be a good idea if..." and then the other will add to that and it just goes from there.

Girlposse.com: What keeps you going on a bad day?
Kim: Focusing on the positive aspects of what I'm doing and listening to the encouragement from the people around me. Always keeping busy, too... I can't sit idle too long and dwell on something that's not going the right way. And when all else fails, there's always chocolate... plenty of chocolate.

Girlposse.com: Where are some of your favorite places to shop?
Kim: It depends on what I'm shopping for. I used to only buy vintage, but these days I like to choose from a mix of different retail venues, including everything from estate sales to funky, off -the -beaten path type places and, of course, online shopping (like many of the links on your site). I also love to explore the local shopping venues whenever I travel, especially the places I've discovered in Asia.

Girlposse.com: What was the best piece of advice you've been given?
Kim: An idea only works as hard as you do.

Girlposse.com: What advice would you give to a future Crafty Diva?
Kim: If you're not happy in what you're doing, then determine what it is that makes you happy and figure out a way you can incorporate that into an entrepreneurial career opportunity. And don't be afraid to take risks. Even if you try and it doesn't work out, you have still gained great experiences that will lead you to something that will.

Girlposse.com: Any additional thoughts or comments you'd like to share with the world?
Kim: Work to live, don't live to work.

Girlposse.com: Are they any other Crafty Divas or Entrepreneurial Empresses we should know about?
Kim:
Chicago cartoonist, Jennifer Rapp, who does a line of greeting cards and magnets using her quirky characters called 'Teetersaw'. Check her out at www.teetersaw.com
