The Interview
I'm not even sure where to begin with this girl........
Xiomara's personality simply jolts you. In this case - I was hit through the phone line. Maybe it was the slight case of flu I'm still recovering from - or maybe she is just that big of a force to be reckoned with - but this gal has "it". With warp-speed drive and determination, this is one girl that won't be out of the limelight for very long! Her fans on the street agree. "It's cool walking down the street and people calling my name. Saying 'good job' and 'good luck'. They're really supportive."
Xiomara was destined to be on America's Next Top Model. Not wanting to "sound psychic... " but watching the first season she knew. "It was so me. I just thought 'I'm gonna do the show'." Having been in modeling competitions before (she placed in the Ford Supermodel of the World competition. But "I didn't win. Which sucks."), and having tested with a couple of agencies, Xiomara was ready to face the world - and the cameras. "The on camera part was a little different. People just act different."
Part reality show, part competition. Did she always feel like she was in a competition? "Yeah, but it was more or less me competing with myself. I didn't see me as the same type as anyone. They did a great job of getting all different types of girls. There was no one person I felt I was competing with." So how was it to live with them all? "With girls it is different. There's cattiness. And everyone getting their monthly cycles... Certain people acting up. I got along with everyone. I'm not a confrontational person. Everyone has their annoying quirks - just like me." Shandi and Yoanna were "my girls" from the beginning, and Xiomara has also developed a friendship with Catie. But she really liked everyone. "Some girls don't open up like the rest of them. Which is OK." And Camille? Did she fix Xiomara's jewelry? "No. She got me these ugly crystal earrings....I'd never wear them." After a quick suggestion from us - don't be surprised to see them pop up on eBay. LOL
What did we not see on the show? A whole lotta partying from the sounds of it. "We partied hard, especially me. They didn't show that as much." And did we get to see the real Xiomara? "Absolutely! I can't blame them for using what we gave. You act like a bitch, they show a bitch. You act nice, they show you being nice."
It wasn't all fun and games all of the time. The girls had numerous photo shoots and lessons to keep them busy. Xiomara looked absolutely stunning in a photo shoot where she was made to look like Grace Jones. It turned out to be one of her favorite shoots. "That, and the first one - the Garden of Eden shoot. I also liked the Steve Madden shoot. The picture that I chose - not the one they have on the site....The one where I'm standing up. It's a phat picture. It is really cool."
But being as it is - America's Next Top Model is a competition, and someone goes home every week. So far Xiomara hasn't been surprised by any of the eliminations - except for hers. "They've pretty much gone as I expected. As far as type...industry-wise. Not going by attitude or personality. Just based on looks alone." So why was she surprised that she got the boot? "It's TV so you have to have drama." Xiomara went on to explain that the art director got to choose the final shot, and you don't get to see the proofs. It is the one chosen shot that they are judged by, and it maybe isn't always the best one. "But it is TV." Who should be eliminated next? "Camille. Only because she has been in the bottom 2." Although Xiomara thinks that Camille is pretty in her own ("beauty-queen") way , she doesn't feel that she is edgy enough for editorial work. Who does she pick to win? "It better be Yoanna or Shandi or someone's gonna get hurt!"
What did Xiomara learn and what would she change if she had to do it all over? She would be true to herself. "A sense of self is what modeling is all about. Listen to yourself. Don't listen to anyone else. Take advice, but make your own decisions. That's where I screwed up." She went on "I would be tough, more myself. Being able to connect with yourself and what people suggest is key."
Overall, Xiomara loved the whole experience. "I would do it a thousand times over for the exposure it gave me." She also had a bit of a reality check when she went out to dinner with Adrienne, last season's Top Model. "It was a wake up call. Adrienne is a very real person. She has a hard time." Differentiating yourself from being a "Reality TV Star" and a model is what comes with the territory if you're chosen as the winner. "People think she got it easy. They like to see people that struggle and make it."
But Xiomara isn't discouraged. In fact - she sees this as just a stepping stone. "You'll see me again!" She has already been scouted by two different agencies, which she'll take more seriously than she did in her "younger" years. She is also looking to get into TV. "The camera loves me, as I do it. I would love to get on camera work. I can't see myself doing anything else!"
We believe that her fans would agree. To them she has the following parting words: "I want to thank everyone for supporting me. And thanks to everyone that had my back.To those that hated - thanks - that's what keeps the fire burning. I'll be back. X has NOT left the building!"
