It hadn't been a very good time around here for myself personally. My brother was in Iraq - and I was making numerous trips to his house dealing with some hellish roommates (are they still considered roommates when they steal, don't pay rent and destroy the place?). The process involved friends, neighbors, the Sheriff's department, utility companies and attorneys by the time it was all said and done. Things were a mess.......
What does this have to do with David Smith, and his CD, Fastest Machine?
It was during one of these 7 hour drives that I first popped the disc in my CD player for a listen. I was at an all-time high stress level - and not feeling really happy or good toward anything.
The timing was perfect.
Smith's soothing vocals instantly calmed my nerves. Within 60 seconds of "Cheap Seats", the first track on the disc, I was more entranced with the music than the disaster I was sure I was headed for.
Almost instantly I was reminded of the magic power of music.
I had known this my whole life. Music can set your tone or mood. Or it can match a mood, an attitude, a feeling. Music can transcend the physical realities of a situation and offer an escape.
As I listened to the 30+ minute collection of touching and soul-searching lyrics, coupled with an almost understated accompaniment of musical prowess - I found myself wondering why we haven't heard of David Smith before now. I hadn't fogotten the trouble I was headed for - but by the time I arrived I was once again a rational person. I had calmed down enough to think things through clearly and reasonably. For once since the ordeal had begun I wasn't listening to music that matched my mood - I listened to music that helped set the mood - a better mood.
The end result? I won. My brother won. On this trip things finally were getting on track. We got the roommates (moochers of the WORST kind) out - and life began to go back to normal.
Do I give credit to David Smith? In part. :) As well as the numerous people that were directly involved.
More importantly - when I now listen to tracks from Fastest Machine (especially "Signal" - my favorite track!) I am reminded of the ability to overcome. It has become a soundtrack of that time. Both good and bad. But mostly the good. It is a reason why I love this CD.
Why will you love the CD? Because it is phenomenal. It harkens back to the time when singer / songwriters ruled the musical kingdoom. If you appreciate solid songwriting and true musical talent, add this CD to your collection. It now has a permanent home amongst Cat Stevens, Dave Matthews Band, Nick Drake, James Taylor, Norah Jones, Joni Mitchell, and Mary Borgia in my CD collection.
Thank you David Smith - for the feeling... the music... for everything! :)
