*** Howard Gladstone CD Release ***
*** Sunflowers Light the Room to be released November 9 ***

Toronto -- 18/10/02 -- Singer/songwriter Howard Gladstone will release his debut CD Sunflowers Light the Room in Toronto on Saturday, November 9th at Clinton’s (693 Bloor West). The cover charge is $8, or $20 with the CD. Doors open at 9pm, with acoustic-pop band Likewater opening the evening at 9:30, and Howard Gladstone appearing on stage at 10:30.

Gladstone’s music has been described as “acoustic folk rock with a country twist”; yet his songs cannot be that easily categorized. The lyrical style is as diverse as the music. One minute ethereal, the next minute hard-hitting, Sunflowers Light the Room is a musical statement that is meant to be both personal and universal, in concept and in style.

A music lover as well as a songwriter, Toronto-based Gladstone has long listened to and absorbed myriad inspirations. His songs owe their roots to diverse musical and literary influences, ranging from Sufi poet Jelaluddin Rumi to Bob Dylan, from modern singer/songwriters and blues to the ‘murder ballad’ tradition, with helpings of rock, pop, Indian music, jazz and a smattering of the classics. Howard Gladstone has long been involved in the folk and contemporary music scene.

A collection of 13 original songs, Sunflowers Light the Room displays a wide yet unified variety of musical styles, including folk, rock, blues, country, and a couple of jazz-tinged ballads.

Produced by the Juno Award-winning Tony Quarrington, and recorded at The Recording Service, Sunflowers Light the Room features Howard Gladstone’s vocals and acoustic guitar, accompanied by a stellar collection of Canadian musicians (Eddie Baltimore – dobro, percussion; Victor Bateman – acoustic bass; Lori Cullen – background vocals; Bonnie Gladstone – background vocals; Brian Gladstone – banjo; Bob George – piano; Dennis Keldie – B3 organ, piano, mini-Moog, mellotron, accordion; Anne Lindsay – violin; Blair Lofgrin – cello; Bruce Longman – electric bass; Kirk MacDonald – tenor sax; Gary Orme – drums; Tony Quarrington – guitars, mandolin, banjo, keyboards, synthesizers, string arrangements; Barry Romberg – drums; Suzie Vinnick – bass, background vocals; David Woodhead – fretless bass).

At the CD Release Concert on November 9th, Howard Gladstone’s band will include Tony Quarrington on guitar, Bruce Longman on bass, Mike McClelland on drums, and some special guests.
