LOS ANGELES -- From his work with the Doobie Brothers to his recent albums of Motown covers, singer Michael McDonald has put his distinctive blue-eyed soul stamp on song after song. Rhino Records collects the best from his nearly 30-year recording career for MICHAEL McDONALD: THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION. Featuring 19 tracks, McDonald's first career-spanning collection is available August 9 at regular retail outlets and at www.rhino.com for a suggested list price of $18.98.
THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION tracks McDonald's career as an expert musical craftsman whose trademark combination of brawny baritone and smooth mix of pop and soul earned him a string of hits on Billboard's Pop, R&B and Adult Contemporary charts. The compilation is the first to include essential tracks from his work as a solo artist, as well as Doobie Brothers hits, various duets and a soundtrack contribution.
After joining the Doobie Brothers in 1976, McDonald cut four successful albums with the band -- including 1978's Minute By Minute, which sold three million copies and earned four Grammy’ Awards -- before leaving in 1982 to launch a solo career. THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION features six Doobie Brothers classics from that era including "It Keeps You Runnin'," "Takin' It To The Streets," "You Belong To Me," "Minute By Minute," "Real Love" and the #1 Billboard Pop chart hit, "What A Fool Believes."
McDonald's solo career is represented by "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time .You're Near)," which cracked the Top 10 of Billboard's Pop, R&B and Adult Contemporary charts, "I Gotta Try" and "No Lookin' Back." Also included are "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," from McDonald's 2003 platinum release Motown, plus "Sweet Freedom," a song that appeared on the movie soundtrack for Running Scared and was a Top 10 hit on Billboard's Pop and Adult Contemporary charts.
Among the many highlights on THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION are McDonald's duets. "Yah Mo B There" with James Ingram earned the duo a Grammy Award as well as spots on Billboard's R&B, Pop and Adult Contemporary charts in 1983. McDonald returned three years later with Patti LaBelle for "On My Own," a major crossover sensation that rocketed to #1 on Billboard's Pop and R&B charts and #2 on the Adult Contemporary chart.
