American Beauty
"One of the best movies I've ever seen." While watching the characters in American Beauty - you're getting a very real glimpse into today's American lifestyle. (Sad as that may be.)
Kevin Spacey is phenomenal as a burnt out suburban dad, going through a mid life crisis. Not finding fulfillment in his marriage, he starts to fantasize about one of his daughter's high school
friends (Mena Suvari). Meanwhile his wife (played so accurately by Annette Bening as a materialistic, nonfeeling bitch) is getting her jollies elsewhere. This leaves the daughter (Thora Birch) -
completely humiliated by her dad's horny behavior - falling for the new neighbor (Scott Bakula) who chronicles all of life with a video camera. At times the movie made me laugh out loud - and at others
made me pray that I'd never turn out like either parent.
Although I had heard the ending was a bit of a surprise twist - it actually ended just as I suspected. And for once this wasn't a bad
thing. (Trixie, Nov. 1999)
