September Movie Reviews
From the 2000 Toronto International Film Festival
Monkey’s Mask
Another interesting, risky Australian movie, which may be a little too much for the mainstream American movie theater-goer to deal with. There are naked, lesbian love scenes performed with
great reality by Kelly Mc Gillis and Susie Porter, which are refreshing as these are real women with realistic bodies which real women will appreciate.
The movie is based on a best selling book
and has an interesting story line and plot. A little too much ‘bad’ language but it seems to be needed to bring the movie together, to make it all make sense.
Worth a viewing for the not so
mainstream film edge it holds and for the great directing and story line.

The film is based on a book, which is a lesbian detective story written completely in poetic verse. The translation to film offered a certain rhythm to the storyline that is rarely
experienced in film. If you live in Australia be sure to catch it in January (the expected release date).

This one is about a lesbian investigator working on a murder of a young, budding poet. It is based on a book written in poetic verse and takes much of the dialogue from the book, which
makes for an interesting movie. I liked the dialogue a lot. And I liked the lesbian sex scenes too (although, I don’t know about my straight friends). The women in the movie were actually real women,
complete with wrinkles and cellulite, and that was refreshing. It was also sort of a thriller,
but it didn’t really take many twists and turns. It was entertaining, but this is also one that won’t make it to theaters near you (I’m pretty sure). After, there was a Q & A with the lead actress and the director, who were funny and very down to earth.
