September Movie Reviews From the 2000 Toronto International Film Festival
Prick Up Your Ears
This is an old movie, available on video. If you have a chance to see a great flick on a large screen rather than on your 19" television, go for it. We did, and the large screen just
brings everything to life.
Prick Up Your Ears is based on a true story of a playwright who makes his mark in the world of theater, learns all about sexual desire and how to fulfill it, and dies an
untimely, violent death. If he wasn't murdered, surely he would have died of an STD eventually.
This flick is worth seeing if you don't have a bias against the homosexual community and if you are
a free thinker. It isn't for the rednecks, that's for sure. The best line in the movie dealt with Australians and their sex drive so to speak. Bettie, Trixie and I were cracking up.
The movie was gripping and somewhat shocking. I thought it was great.

Gary Oldman offered a playful performance of the playwright Joe Orton. In the mid 1960's Orton had the world at his feet and an insecure lover (Kenneth Halliwell) at his side. As his
success grew, his sexual exploitations and indiscretions became commonplace. It was becoming obvious to everyone that Kenneth is an impediment to Joe, including Kenneth himself. One night, in a fit of
passionate rage, disappointment and jealousy towards all that Joe had become, Kenneth kills Joe, then himself.
Prick Up Your Ears was released in 1987 and shows Gary Oldman in a role unlike his
most recent work. This is definitely worth picking up on video.
