The Wisdom of Crocodiles

From the 1999 Toronto International Film Festival
Starring: Jude Law, Elina Lowenshon, Timothy Spall, Kerry Fox, Jak Davenport and Colin Salmon. Directed by Po Chih Leong (famous for his Hong Kong films).

A very interesting "vampire" movie that is a departure from the typical vampire genre. After reading the review I actually expected something quite different. The story was slow paced (in a good way) and very measured in telling the tale of Steven Grlscz - a modern day vampire looking for the love in his victims' blood. He finds and meets a very strong woman that he falls in love with, which begins his undoing. The acting was very well done - and the story and movie unlike other movies I have seen. It's very hard to describe the movie without giving it totally away - or doing it justice. You simply must see this to understand.

After the movie a Q and A session was done with Po Chih Leong and I was surprised to learn that this movie was done for $6 million and 8 weeks of filming. I really expected a larger budget due to the quality of the film. Mr. Leong was quite funny and very honest in his responses to questions (I loved his comment about the lack of blood in the movie compared to his others - considering the amount of blood in the film - especially in the beginning.) Definitely not a cheery film . But wonderful nonetheless.

Although no fangs were shown, this is a vampire movie with a twist. The car up a tree provided an excellent opening scene to start the thought process in motion.

Working with the theory that it isn't just blood that vampires need to live on, but emotions found in the blood. Manipulating the victims to feel the right emotions to keep our star alive, spun a clever tale. Perfect for the midnight madness showing and for anyone intrigued by things that go bump in the night.
