Well, let just get this right out of the way; this is a great
album! Mary Karlzen has it all from the cover to the song titles, the song arrangements, the mixing, sound, and actual talent. This CD is one to get if you’re into
bands such as the Eagles, Alanis Morrisette, just to name a couple. On some of the reviews I received with this CD, they mentioned ‘country’ style. ??? To the
writers who think this has country written on it is like saying Metallica's ‘Mama Said’ off the Load album makes Metallica a country band. I don’t think so. Although the coveralls Mary
wears may hint at that style I feel her music is more like the Eagles (their greatest hits 1971-1975).
I think Mary should change country girl style to something that fits her music.
Remember the music world is show biz and fashion is everything! From Lenny Kravitz to Madonna. There are two other suggestions I have for this band. That
is the band should be credited along with Mary’s name. Example: Mary Karlzen and the Eagles. They are all talented musicians with special credit to
the bass player. Lastly, the lyrics could be posted in the CD. Mary has a clear and beautiful voice but I personally enjoy reading along and understanding the
singers / songwriters intent. As in all my reviews I look for 3 areas of improvement and 3 areas of excellent. This CD was difficult to find the first three.
The CD begins with ‘when you go’, the song has a hint of country feel in the guitar but it is much more than that. Mary’s voice sores over the instruments in
a clear and beautiful way. The song has success written all over it. ‘One thing’ takes the mood to a Jimmy Buffit ‘margarita Ville’ feel with the bass playing
grooving out the rhythm. I could just imagine a beautiful sunny day, Mary and her girl friends driving a convertible down HWY 1. It just has that feel to it. The
album has acoustic guitar underlining a lot of the tracks. There is also a glimpse of piano playing on the song ‘she’. The most country type song on
here is ‘reunion’, which reminds me more of the Eagles ‘tequila sunrise’ than Dwight Yokum or Trisha Yearwood.
This CD doesn’t have any bad songs on it and in fact it is quite impressive.
Mary Karlzen is a very talented individual with a siren voice, talented songwriter, and guitarist. If you’re into the Eagles, Alanis Morrisette, or just
relaxing to some Counting Crowes than this is the CD for you. Don’t miss out!
