Hero

Stevie Nicks

Trying to explain why Stevie Nicks is one of my heroes is really hard. I'm sure I have the same reasons a lot of other Stevie fans have: the music, the personality, the emotions and feelings in her songs, blah, blah, blah. I'll be honest...when I first started liking Stevie, it was because of her songs...they were catchy and I'd sing along with the radio. And of course I thought she looked really cool, and she was this huge "rock star". Someone I could pretend to be like. Then I moved to California and my aunt Lisa was a HUGE fan. Whenever I was in trouble and grounded, Lisa was the only one I was allowed to leave my house with. We'd drive around in her car for hours listening to Stevie, and singing along as loud as we could. And that started my collection of good memories I have associated with Stevie. I can't explain why she's my hero - she just is. But I can tell you the story behind the reason I owe Stevie a HUGE thanks for one of my best friends. It's the strangest way I've ever heard on how 2 friends have met (but maybe that's just me). Here it is:

While I was in my initial stage of collecting Stevie posters, pictures, etc (in 1986-1987) Lisa worked at a photo developing lab. And there was a girl that would come in and have these great pictures of her and Stevie developed. Lisa wasn't usually there when she was, but told me she was about my age and thought maybe we went to school together (but never had a name).
A few months later this girl had come in and was having pictures developed of her bedroom. There were Stevie pictures and posters all over her walls, including a poster I had never seen before. I asked my aunt if I could keep the picture (they were throwing it out because the color was off) so that I could try to find the poster, and she said "Sure...just don't tell anyone". I stuck it in my photo album of Stevie pictures after never having found the poster and kind of forgot about it.

About a year later I met a girl (Anita) that worked at a place that sold rock and roll pictures. We got to be friends and she was helping me find Stevie pictures to add to my collection. One day she came over to look through what I had and came across this picture. She studies it for awhile and says "Wow...this looks just like my friend Leeanne's room". After looking closer she says (really loud) "Oh my god, it is her room. Where'd you get this?" Of course I'm sitting there feeling like a complete idiot and didn't know what to say. I never noticed that in the photo you could see an autographed picture of Stevie that said "To Leeanne". Duh.

Anita thinks this is funny, I'm mortified, so of course she calls this Leeanne girl right then and there. Leeanne wasn't in, so Anita left the message "You're never gonna believe this, but I'm at this girls house and she has a picture of your bedroom in her photo album. Call me." I'm about ready to die. I don't want to meet this girl. How am I going to explain that I have this picture?

But Leeanne calls Anita back and we make plans to meet for dinner a couple of days later. I go (dreading every second, scared this chick's gonna beat me up or something) and we met. Of course the first thing she asks is where I got it...and she's not lookin' too friendly...and I squeak out the story about my aunt Lisa. I'm sure she's gonna have us arrested or something, but she thought it was pretty funny. We've been the best of friends ever since (obviously my fear of her beating me up was unfounded), and this page and story are dedicated to her.

Leeanne and I have been through a lot of Stevie experiences together...too many to name (who could forget that party at Stevie's house, huh Leeanne?) But a lot of the reason Stevie is one of my hero's is because I've been able to experience how much she means to Leeanne and how much she has affected her life. I still think she dresses really cool, and I still love her music, and her live shows are great. But more than anything, she's never made excuses for her life, she's screwed up and she's straightened out, and mostly, anyone that can look the way she does at 50 deserves to be everybody's hero.

OK...so that story probably wasn't the most exciting thing you've ever read. But it's my life, so I like it. And I know you really haven't learned anything about who Stevie is as a person, and maybe you want to. She is a very generous person, and she is involved in quite a few charities, and she is fascinating. I won't try to explain how and why Stevie is great. Too many people have done it better than I. If you do want more info, I highly suggest going to The Nicks Fix. They've got all you'd ever want to know. (Current news, articles, pictures, appearances, etc.)
And that's why Stevie is one of my heroes!
