Strippers, Protests and Breast Milk, Oh My!!!
By Trixie
An odd little story and my favorite little town made national news recently. Maybe you heard about it on Rush Limbaugh, or the Bob and Tom show. Perhaps you read about it in the New York Post, or saw it on television. With all going on in the world, I can see how this story grabbed our nation's attention. After all, it contains many of the elements that make for a good, juicy story: an alleged crime, a good looking female, a strip club and breast milk. (Yep - breast milk folks...) I'm talking about the School House in Jackson, Michigan where a 23-year-old man claimed a dancer squirted breast milk into his eyes during a lap dance at the nightclub. This incident resulted in one of the strangest assault charges I've seen. The stripper has since denied the incident, claims in fact that the guy in question attacked her. So far no charges have been brought against either party.
But that is just one more chapter in what has been an interesting story. A chapter that changed my entire writing process for this article. Originally it was to be about the protests and controversy surrounding the School House opening in Jackson. After an 18 month legal battle, the owners and city council finally came to an agreement (i.e: City Council realized they were going to lose): the strip club, which features all nude dancers and no alcohol, may be open in it's present downtown location for 15 months before it has to move. The legal issues are interesting enough. Add to it the group of people that have organized for the sole purpose of protesting the club, and my interest was piqued. I don't get these protesters. I mean - I can see some people not wanting to visit such an establishment - but since when do they think it is their right to take away our right to do so? Hello???? What country are we in???
But the breast milk story broke, and since I was heading back to Jackson anyway - I knew I had to go see what "the hullabaloo" (as my husband put it) was all about. So I recruited a friend of mine to venture downtown for a look-see. Good thing - since I found out that I would not have been allowed in without a male escort. Normally this pisses me off - but when I heard the explanation - "too keep out prostitutes" - it made sense. So we headed downtown to the fairly new (they opened July 23rd) "fine adult entertainment" establishment.
I was first impressed with how we were treated when we got to the door. We were greeted and welcomed warmly by a kind gentleman in a tuxedo. (But damn - no protesters to take my picture or harass me - I was a bit disappointed.) He quickly scanned our IDs, took our cover charge and told us the two house rules: No touching the girls, and to buy a drink every half hour or so. OK - so my buddy for the evening seemed to have a problem with the drinks rule. But as I see it they're basically charging you about 10 bucks an hour to see some girls dance, strip, get naked, etc. - and giving you get a couple of drinks with that. No big deal - I've spent more for shitty concerts, movies, etc.
We were escorted to our table by one of the waitresses - and I scanned the place. It was very clean, and tastefully decorated. Each table seemed to have a good view of the stage - and on the stage paraded an assortment of very attractive women. I admit - I was surprised. It's a small town - I didn't really think the girls would look this good. They were also pleasant to talk to, and had charming personalities - at least amongst the few we conversed with. But I have to admit that what I love best about strip clubs (besides the people watching) is the music. And the School House was playing some kick butt rockin' tunes. Oh yeah - I was groovin'.
After checking the place out I talked to the gentleman at the door for a bit and he introduced me to one of the owners, Greg McCloud. Greg brought me a Diet Pepsi and we ventured outside for a friendly chat. He talked about the history of the legal battle (which he fought because he was right - not because he's just stubborn. I had to ask.....), the protesters (which he believes have their right to freedom of speech as much as he does - although he does have fun with them from time to time) the "breast milk incident" ("we were very surprised by the national attention"), amongst other things. He was gracious and polite (even when he called me a Democrat and asked if I were one of Rush's "femi-nazis" - and I thought we had been getting along so well...) and strongly believes in his right to run his business. A business which so far employs 80 people in a town with rising unemployment. Outside of the aforementioned incident, the club has been trouble free.
It was during our chat that Greg offered the following invitation: Rush Limbaugh, Bob and Tom, et al are personally invited to visit the School House in Jackson, Michigan. No cover. Personally I think its a great idea! C'mon Rush - it is the birthplace of the Republican Party....... and with what you've learned from your listeners about breast milk you know you'll be safe. :)
As for everyone else, if you're into strip clubs (or "gentlemen clubs"), this one is highly recommended. It has Trixie's official stamp of "'Posse Approval". ;)
The School House is located at 125 E. Michigan, Jackson, Michigan. 517-990-0291.
