The Road to Arkansas
(The Adventures of Trixie and Titi)
When Titi (pronounced Tee-Tee) said she was going to make the road trip to Booneville, Arkansas to see family, I couldn't resist. OK - I could think of livlier destinations - but just the thought of a road trip sounded appealing. I had plenty to keep me busy while we were in the sleepy town of Booneville. I had tons to read, a lot to write, and plenty of thoughts I needed to get organized. The rest and relaxation wouldn't hurt, either. Titi warned me about the lack of entertainment in Booneville. Heck - they celebrated their second traffic light with a parade. But I wasn't to be deterred. To me it was all about the journey - not the destination. So on a Thursday morning we loaded up her car with enough Diet Coke, smokes and good tunes to get us through the estimated 17 hour drive and hit the road.
To make this a proper road trip (and a bit more interesting) we decided to drive as far as St. Louis, Missouri. We arrived in the early evening, grabbed a bite to eat, then checked into the first hotel Titi saw. (From this point on everything that happened that evening is her fault. I accept no responsibility whatsoever.)
The hotel was cheap, but within a few short blocks of Laclede's Landing - an area known for clubs, bars and entertainment. It was dark as we were checking in. I should have been a little wary when we realized the lobby was locked and we had to check in through a walk up window. But we were only hours into our adventure and caution hadn't yet entered our vocabulary. As we were checking in a very large, black man was waiting patiently behind us. Again - we didn't think we needed to be worried. And we didn't....until a very small, very drunk white guy came up. Following is what transpired next:
Small White Guy (SWG): (slurring badly) You got a problem?
Large Black Guy (LBG): (after a pause) I don't have any problem. (another longer pause as SWG continues to stare and sway on his feet) "Buudy - you just need to go to your room and sleep it off."
A staring contest then ensues....
SWG: What?
LBG: (in a very even, weary tone) I'm the last person you want to have a problem with.
(pause...meanwhile Titi is laughing and I'm just getting checked in wondering what she has gotten me into.)
SWG: (as he moves in closer to Titi - as if to protect her...) I'm not afraid to die...
("Oh shit" is what's now going through my mind as I'm finding it harder and harder not to laugh out loud...)
SWG: N___er, please....
Yup - that did it. LBG takes one step forward - lightly tags SWG in the chest and SWG takes off running - not to be seen again.
By this time we have the key to our room. As we turn to get our bags, LWG apologizes to us for the disturbance. We assured him that he has no need to apologize. Little white dude was way too drunk. After a brief exchange we made our way to our home for the evening. After discovering the lack of a shower curtain we had to make a quick room change. Our new room was at the end of the row, and we were greeted by our overly friendly (if not quite "all there") neighbor waving and saying "Hi.Hi. Hi." repeatedly. We get checked in and cleaned up. As I leave the room I find our strange little neighbor trying to peek through our windows. When he spots me he trots (literally - have you ever seen a grown man trot?!?!?) back to his open doorway. When he arrives he spins back around and starts waving and saying "Hi. Hi. Hi." as if he has not just been discovered as a peeping tom. We let it slide and chalk it up to just another experience this motel has to offer within the first 30 minutes of arriving.
We made our way to Laclede's Landing. We were kind of surprised by how empty the area seemed. None of the bars or clubs had much of a crowd. As were deciding which direction we should head, I heard the sounds of cheering. A crowd? We followed the noise and found ourselves in Big Bang, a dueling piano bar. It still wasn't a large crowd - but a crowd nonetheless. We found a table off to the side and settled in for some entertainment. We were shortly joined by a couple of the Royal British Airforce's finest. We found it difficult to converse with the loud singing and playing - so Titi (again - I blame her) suggested we head to a different club. As we headed out the door I noticed that our group of 4 and suddenly turned much larger. Instead of just 2 of the airmen with us - we now had about 7. I'm still not sure if the other girls in the bar were highly impressed or extrmely jealous. :)
We ventured to a couple different clubs with our newfound friends, and finally settled in at Morgan Street Brewary to chat. We somehow lost most of the guys along the way, and spent the evening with Bob and Dave. It was probably the most intelligent conversation I have ever had in a bar. It was fascinating to hear how people in other parts of the world reacted to the events of September 11. Being in the military, our companions had an especially viewpoint on our response in the middle East. Beofre we knew it, it was after 2AM. We all had to be up early the next day to leave town (they were headed to California), so we bid our farewells and called it a night. It was a lovely evening, and a great beginning to our trip. To Bob and Dave - thanks!
