Lantau Island, Hong Kong (part 1) (click on any picture to see enlarged version)
Lantau Island actually means 'broken head' in Cantonese. It is nearly twice the size as Hong Kong Island, yet has no where near the same population. Most of the
island is mountainous and not habitable. It is a great place to go to escape the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong Island. There are some interesting villages, mountain hikes and Buddhist monasteries.
A couple of years ago the largest outdoor Buddha statue in the world was built high upon the hill above the Po Lin monastery. It
is called the Tiantan Buddha and is well worth a visit to the island to see it. You can admire it from the lower level or climb the very many stairs to take a closer look and ponder the gigantic size of
the statue and the smaller statues that stand guard around it.
You can buy a ticket from the lower level ticket office, climb the stairs
and enter the inside of the Buddha for a meal at the restaurant there. You will also find some tacky souvenir stores selling a wide variety of
miniature Buddas. Alternatively, you can head to the grounds of the monastery where you can select from a restaurant or a fast food counter to satisfy your hunger. Keep in mind, only vegetarian food is
served here. (read more about Lantau....)
