Santorini Greek Island
Santorini is easily accessible from Athens or any of the other Greek Islands. Just take a short flight or hydrofoil or a longer ferry ride and you are there. Keep in mind it is also one of the
most expensive islands to visit, next to Mykonos, so budget wisely. It is also one of the most beautiful so well worth a few days of exploration. If you have the time, ferry from island to island to find
your favorite one.
It isn't unusual to have to share a taxi on the islands. This doesn't mean that your fare will be reduced, it just means that if you have to be somewhere at a particular time,
be sure to leave earlier than necessary to get to your destination as there may be some unexpected stops on the way. I was headed to the port to catch a ferry and the other passenger who happened to be
in the taxi when I was picked up, had to go to the airport. As we neared the port, the other passenger realized that we were not near the airport and she was going to miss her flight. She kept trying to
explain this to the driver, who in the typical Greek Island response said, "No problem." She in turn replied, "It may not be a problem to you, but it is a big problem for me." The
people who live on the islands seem to have very little time reality.
Fira is the capitol and the best place to walk around the edge of the Caldera (crater). From here you can see an amazing view
of multi colored lava on the cliff face; the attraction caused by a huge volcanic eruption way back in history. There are also many museums to visit here and shopping to do. It is also the place to find
the most tourists so it can be a little hectic and crowded during the summer months. Black beaches are another attraction in Santorini. There are buses to take you to them which can be a little crowded,
but just think of it as an experience. Read more...
