What to Do When a Friend Has an Addiction

Having a friend with an addiction is not easy for anyone who knows them. Weather the addiction is to a drug, food, or unhealthy activity, for the people that care about them, addiction is a difficult thing to watch. So when you find out that a friend is addicted to something what do you do? Do you confront them, tell someone, or just look the other way?

Well just looking the other way is not an option. When a friend starts a downward spiral it can be nearly impossible to stop on their own. For the addict, it can be easy to rationalize their actions and in their mind, they are doing nothing wrong. This is especially true when it comes to hard drug addictions.

Depending on how far they are gone, rationalizing with, your friend, the addict can be just the help they need to kick the addiction. However, it is not a good idea to do this alone because they may lash out. Be careful and bring a mutual friend along.

The best idea is to speak with a trusted adult that knows your friend, the addict personally. They will help to find the right course of action. Make sure you are respectful of your friend feelings and concerns. Help them to figure out and change what began the addiction in the first place.

Hopefully, the addiction can be stopped and you can help your friend to rebuild their life. After quitting the substance it the most important time for an addict to have support from family and loved one. Make sure that they have someone available to confide in, someone that cares about them. Life as usual resumes sooner than you would think. Remember, an addiction does not define a person, let them move on from the past, without condemnation.
